Travel is always exciting. There’s always some stress associated with traveling, but it can be reduced with a little planning ahead of time. Before going on your trip, verify you have your passport and any other necessary documents to ensure an enjoyable time.

Study up on the language of the area you are planning to travel to before you leave. Language barriers can be tricky. Obviously, you can manage in a foreign country without speaking the language. Even so, it is always a good idea to brush-up on important words like “police” or “hospital.”

To make it easier to find your luggage when it comes around, put a very unique tag or marker on your bag so it sets itself apart from all of the others. It can be a scarf, some neon tape, a sticker, etc. Just make sure that it is something bright and obvious.

A great way to get some sleep on an airplane is by bringing an eye mask. Even when you close your eyes, you can still see the different colors and shapes in front of you. With an eye mask, that will allow it to be completely blacked out, allowing much better chance of sleep.

If you are not interested in striking up a conversation with your seat mates, make sure you bring along big, noise-cancelling headphones. Most people will not try to strike up a conversation with someone who is obviously not interested in talking. These have the added bonus of blocking out the sounds of babies crying or people chatting while you relax.

Even if you don’t have a digital music player, bring headphones on your flight. Many airlines have in-flight entertainment systems that are free to use but require headphones. Instead of paying $5 for the crummy airline headphones, bring your own and enjoy your flight in comfort and style.

One of the easiest, most effective and affordable ways to offset the unflattering aftermath of jet lag, is to drink plenty of water. Being dehydrated can cause you to feel light-headed, dizzy and fatigued, upon landing. Seasoned travelers report that drinking at least four eight-ounce glasses of water over a five-hour trip, can make a noticeable difference.

If you plan to travel with children it is best to think ahead. Kids are not the easiest to vacation with and will need quite a few entertainment tools to keep them happy. If you make a list in advance, you will know exactly what to bring when you travel.

Making a photocopy of your passport before your trip can save you from trouble on your travels. If you happen to lose your passport while traveling internationally, take the copy to your embassy. Having a copy handy will help expedite getting a replacement.
